Perspectives on Education with Kalman Hettleman and Erica Green

Enoch Pratt Free Library

Join us at the Pratt Central Library’s Wheeler Auditorium to hear Buzzy Hettleman and Erica Green discuss modern American education.

Kalman “Buzzy” Hettleman has an acclaimed career on the frontlines of national, state and local education policy. In recent years, he has focused on struggling readers and students with disabilities. His new book, Mislabeled as Disabled: The Educational Abuse of Struggling Learners and How We Can Fight It, exposes how public schools violate the law and rights of struggling learners. Advance reviews of the book by experts in the field have included praise like "extraordinary and deeply disturbing" and “a masterpiece." Kirkus Review commends its “cogent case for making changes to the system” and calls it “a useful guidance for parents … and activists.”

He is presently a member of the Maryland Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education (the Kirwan Commission), charged by the governor and state legislature with recommending comprehensive, statewide K-12 school reform. In Baltimore, he has been a member of the school board twice and deputy mayor/executive assistant for education (and other social programs) under two mayors.

Erica L. Green is a correspondent in the Washington Bureau of The New York Times covering education and education policy.
