Fran Wilde: His Hideous Heart

The Ivy Bookshop

The Ivy welcomes Fran Wilde and Karen Osborne to discuss Wilde’s contribution to the new book of Poe-inspired works, His Hideous Heart.

Edgar Allan Poe may be 150 years beyond this world, but the themes of his beloved works have much in common with modern young adult fiction. Whether the stories are familiar to readers or discovered for the first time, readers will revel in both Edgar Allan Poe's classic tales, and in the 13 unique and unforgettable ways that they've been brought to life in His Hideous Heart.

Fran Wilde’s novels and short stories have been finalists for four Nebula Awards, a World Fantasy Award, and two Hugo Awards, and include her Nebula- and Compton-Crook-winning debut novel Updraft, its sequels Cloudbound, and Horizon, her 2019 debut Middle Grade novel Riverland, and the Nebula-, Hugo-, and Locus-nominated novelette The Jewel and Her Lapidary. Her short stories appear in Asimov’sTor.comBeneath Ceaseless SkiesShimmerNature, and the 2017 Year’s Best Dark Fantasy and Horror.

Karen Osborne is a writer, visual storyteller and violinist. Her short fiction appears in Uncanny and Fireside magazines, the original science fiction podcast Escape Pod, the flash fiction anthology Robot Dinosaurs, and the literary adventure fantasy podcast Beneath Ceaseless Skies. She is a member of the DC/MD-based Homespun Ceilidh Band, emcees the Charm City Spec reading series, and once won a major event filmmaking award for taping a Klingon wedding. Her debut novel, Architects of Memory, is forthcoming in fall 2020 from Tor Books. Karen lives in Baltimore, MD, with two violins, an autoharp, five cameras, a husband and a bonkers orange cat.
